This year marks 20 years of my self-employment madness.
And I mean that in the very best way! It all started with me translating and writing techy stuff, and somewhere along the ride I traded in my keyboard for a camera.
Losing my job 20 years ago seemed frustrating at first, but it turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me.
In my life, tough times usually turned into the best chapters of my life (the beauty of hindsight). Without them, I’d probably still be sitting at a desk in somebody else’s office, translating dull technical manuals, instead of coming up with the courage to run my own show, later on even in the wonderfully wild and competitive world of photography (a dream come true).
Being your own boss is a glorious thing! …until you realize the boss is also the intern, the accountant, the IT department, and the janitor. And yes, self-employment often comes with constant anxiety and bills that seem to multiply like rabbits. But when I look back at everything I’ve built, all on my own, it’s like: Whoa. I did that. That feeling is worth every sleepless night, every nervous sweat, every tear of “how do I file this form again?!”
I believe you need to reinvent yourself every ten years, though I secretly hope I get to do exactly what I’m doing now for a long, long time (well, you can dream).
So here’s to celebrating every single day that I get to do what I love. And an enormous THANK YOU to all of those who’ve been part of this ride. Clients, model owners, followers. Last but not least, big love to my wonderful models—you know who you are and you don’t care, as you are unpretentious and always happy to show your adorableness in exchange for treats or a play.
And here is a selection of some of my wonderful models of the past few months.
